Coops Show Force at Centennial Unity Assembly
More than 24,000 cooperative members nationwide converged for the Centennial Unity Assembly held on October 24, 2015 at the Liwasang Ipil-Ipil Grounds at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, Pasay City. The assembly was convened by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) in partnership with the cooperative apex organization, the Philippine Cooperative Center. Among the participants were the 115-strong delegation from ACDI MPC led by no less than its Chairperson, MGEN GILBERT S LLANTO (Ret), together with the members of the Board of Directors, Management Team, Head Office personnel and selected branches from the National Capital Region Area Operations.
The Centennial Unity Assembly marked the closing of the Cooperative Centennial Year and the Coop Month celebrations. More importantly, it was a solidarity gathering to show the unified strength of the Philippine cooperatives amidst challenges of the time and safeguard the collective interest of the more than 14 million cooperators nationwide.
Of focal interest during the assembly is the unified stand of cooperatives against the pending bills at both houses of Congress that will effectively repeal the tax exemption for cooperatives as provided in Articles 60 and 61 of Republic Act 9520 or the Cooperative Code of the Philippines. There was a resounding call for a bigger budget for CDA needed to push its transformational programs towards the advancement of the Cooperative Movement in the country.
