FIRST WORKSHOP ON ESTABLISHMENT OF INSTITUTE OF COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Twenty six (26) participants from the cooperative sector and academe convened at ACDI Multipurpose Cooperative Multipurpose Hall in Taguig City on February 06, 2018 to talk on the establishment of a cooperative institute that will serve as an intellectual nerve center for the cooperative movement.
The participants in the workshop represented different primary and secondary cooperatives – NCM Advocacy Cooperative, Codis Federation of Cooperatives, ACDI Multipurpose Cooperative, CLIMBS Life and General Insurance Cooperative, Asia Pro Cooperative, Metro South Cooperative Bank, and Caritas Manila. Along with the cooperatives, academics from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) also attended the said activity.
UA&P Professor Bienvenido Nito, Director of NCM Advocacy Cooperative, discussed the rationale of the activity. He expounded on how the Institute could be an effective tool and avenue in elevating poverty and strengthening the governance practices of the cooperatives.
On the other hand, PUP Professor Ellen Mantalaba, an officer of Codis Federation of Cooperatives and NCM Advocacy Cooperative, presented the proposed institute and its possible programs.
At the end of the workshop the body decided to formally name the organization as “Institute of Cooperative Governance and Management”, and recommended the following activities for immediate action:
1. Conduct of Governance and Succession Practices (Need/Gap Analysis)
2. Conduct of a survey to all the Accredited Training Providers (ATP’s); and
3. Conduct of a workshop on Visioning and cooperative Philosophy
The next meeting was set on March 9, 2018 to be hosted by the Metro South Cooperative Bank.
